ABOUT THE AUTHOR: YANN MARTEL

Yann Martel was born in Spain in 1963. He grew up in Costa Rica, France, Mexico, and Canada. After studying philosophy at university Yann Martel worked variously as a dishwasher, tree planter, and security guard. Then he began to write. His first three works being Seven Stories (1993), The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios (1993) and Self (1996)



His fourth published work, Life of Pi garnered him international success and recognition. This book is inspired by his thirteen-month sojourn in India and Moacyr Scliar's Max and the Cats and has won a Man Booker Prize for Fiction for Martel.

Yann Martel and his works have been very much integrated into Canada's arts and cultural community. Apart from the Man Booker Prize, Martel has won a Hugh MacLennan Award, a Governor General's Award, and an Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature.

His latest book, Beatrice and Virgil was published in 2010. Yann Martel currently lives in Saskatoon, Sackatchewan.
